CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – A powerhouse performance from Blood Money headlined an action-packed Saturday card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, while a handful of upsets kept bettors on their toes throughout the 12-dash program.
The $6,250 Preferred 2 pace in race 11 saw Blood Money ($2.60) deliver his fourth straight for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Ron Matheson. Leaving alertly from post 5, the veteran son of Sweet Lou controlled every call through splits of 28.3, 57.3 and 1:25.4 before pacing away to a decisive 1:53.1 victory by five-and-three-quarter lengths for owner Dr. Mitchell Downey of New Brunswick. Nuttin But Finesse (Driven by Mike Downey) was second while Shake N Blake (Ken Murphy) completed the triactor.
Barrieau, Matheson and Downey teamed up again to close out the card in race 12, as One Eight Hundred ($2.70) was guided through fractions of 29.2, 59.1 and 1:27.4 before sealing the deal in 1:55.1. Fast Louie (David Dowling) was second with Louie The Great (Corey MacPherson) third.
Millenium Seelster ($5.20) won the evening opener for the first race in front of the brand new unveiled state-of-the-art video toteboard in the Red Shores Charlottetown centrefield. Emma Christoforou of Moffat, Ont., owns the winning 10-year-old son of Sunshine Beach who stopped the clock in 1:59 on top of a $584.30 triactor for trainer-driver Nicholas Oakes.
The evening’s biggest upset came in race 5 as Edge Of The World ($28.70) rallied from off the pace to score in 1:58.1 for driver Brett Leblanc, nailing Abc (Steven Murphy) late while Proudofyatoday (Keith Ford) hung onto third after cutting the mile.
Lady Devine ($21.20) also lit up the tote board in race 6, getting up in the final strides to defeat heavy favourite Sweet Molly in 1:57.1. Paul Langille engineered the winning trip for trainer Jennifer Doyle, who also won with Moon Bound ($2.40) in race 10 in 1:56.2 and Mantario ($2.70) in 1:57.3 in race 4, both with Dowling in the driver’s seat.
Reggie The Fourth ($2.10) was dominant in race 8, cruising on the front end for Marc Campbell in a 1:57.2 romp, while Doctor Bombay ($3.20) edged Perfection Hanover in a tight finish in race 7 for the Orwell driver to double up his son, trainer Landon Campbell.
