CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – A Boxing Day program loaded with holiday features included a jaw-dropping upset from T H Boomtown in the $5,100 Preferred 2 Pace at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The marquee moment came in race 15 as T H Boomtown ($42.10) detonated the toteboard from off-the-pace in the Preferred 2 Pace with a 1:55.2 score for driver Gilles Barrieau, trainer Ron Matheson and owners Dr. Don Ling and Wayne Macdougall of Stratford. Brookdale Johnny (Driven by Paul Langille) was game in defeat for second ahead of heavy favourite Merigo Magic (Adam Merner). Wind Blown (Corey MacPherson) cut the fractions of 28.1, 57.2 and 1:26.4 before losing a pair of shoes at the three-quarter pole and backing through the field.
The Fillies & Mares PEISHOA Pace in race 3 saw Woodmere Honeymoon ($6.10) continue her strong form with Gilles Barrieau steering the Carson Wilkie trainee to a one-length score in 1:59. The three-year-old daughter of Bet The Moon sat the pocket through splits of 29.2, 59.2 and 1:29.2, then angled out and powered by Tobins Brownie (Merner) to win for owner Christa Dunsford of Donagh. Elm Grove Mistress (David Dowling) finished third.
The Reg Affleck Memorial in race 5 went exactly the way the bettors drew it up as Good Omen ($2.60) put the field away with authority to win by five-and-a-half lengths in 1:58.1 for trainer-driver Langille.
Langille scored three wins as a trainer-driver as Impeccable Shadow ($8.60) won race 14 in 1:58 and Im Hungry ($7.40) was the best in race 6 in a 2:01.4 score. Langille also drove the Tammy Collings trained Brokeandoutofgas ($13.80) to victory in 1:57.4 in race 13 for the driving grand slam.
The Open Trot in race 7 saw Fight Song ($4.30) control every step for Jason Hughes, stopping the clock in 1:58.4 for trainer Ashley Gamester and owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge. Buckhead Ridge (Marc Campbell) was second, while Rocket Blast (Corey Macpherson) completed the top three.
Trainer Landon Campbell doubled with Phil My Beer ($8.00) in 1:57.1 in race 16 and Woodmere Kennedie ($3.40) in race 9, as part of a driving quadruple for Marc Campbell.
