CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Perfection reigned for rookie pacing filly Saulsbrook Rolo on Thursday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park as the filly remains unbeaten in five career starts.
The daughter of Roll With Joe delivered on her 1-9 promise in the Thursday finale, winning her fifth consecutive start, this time in 1:57.1 for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Landon Campbell and owner Carl Stafford of Conception Bay South, N.L. A product of Saulsbrook Farms’ Standardbred Nursery in Windsor, N.S., Saulsbrook Rolo ($2.10) came first-over to wear down pacesetter Woodmere Lizzie (Driven by Corey MacPherson) with Woodmere Betcha (Mike McGuigan) third.
The $4,200 Open Trot was contested in race 6 and delivered a thrilling stretch battle with Fight Song ($5.40) holding off the late challenge of Buckhead Ridge to win in 1:56.1. Jason Hughes engineered the driving victory for trainer Ashley Gamester and owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge. Buckhead Ridge (Marc Campbell) saw his win streak halted at four to finish second, while Desert Hayz (Ryan Desroche) completed the triactor.
Earlier on the card, trotters clashed in the D & G Younker Memorial with a $3,600 purse in race 3. It was Majian Salsa ($5.60) who came out on top in 1:59.2 for driver Ken Murphy, trainer Jim Ripley and owner Marylea Ripley of Amherst, N.S.
Also on the program, Hughes and Gamester teamed up to win with Pop The Pin ($9.00) in a 1:57.2 mile in race 2, with the driver completing the triple with the Todd Walsh trained Miss Maddie P ($4.30) in 1:57.4.
