SUMMERSIDE, PE – The tote board lit up like the Confederation Bridge at sunset in the opening dash on a reschedule Wednesday evening program at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway as Chromed Up pulled off one of the largest upsets of the season.
Dismissed at 71-1 by the betting public, Chromed Up ($145.50) soared from post 8 to win in 1:59 flat with Corey MacPherson in the bike for trainer Chris MacKay and co-owners Marc Gallant and Craig Arsenault. The three-year-old Tobago Cays gelding powered past pacesetter Saulsbrook Bolt (Driven by Brady Sweet) in deep stretch with Wizard (Adam Merner) third to round out the triactor, which returned $518.00 for a $2 ticket.
Newcomer Miki Shan N doubled up trainer MacKay in the $4,600 featured pace in race 13 as the son of Always B Miki was an open-length winner in 1:55 with veteran Gary Chappell at the lines for Ontario owners Earl Hill Jr., and Stephen Klunowski and New York owner Kap Singh Racing Stable. Second went to Howmac Charmer (MacPherson) with Mr Kelly (Merner) third.
The race 1 shocker by Chromed Up set the tone for a wide-open card, but the Sweet family capitalized as favoured Hawkish Deo ($4.00) won race 2 in 2:00.4 for trainer-driver Jaycob Sweet, who later doubled up from his O’Leary outfit with Timberlea Lady ($6.00) in race 5 with a 1:58 clocking.
