CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – On top at every call, Sugar Bowl went all the way in the featured $3,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred Thursday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The opening quarter was tripped by a hard leaving Sugar Bowl and driver Jason Hughes in 28.3 then the pair made it to the half in 59.1 before Pasta Momma (Driven by Marc Campbell) flushed first-up. The front stepping Sugar Bowl and first-over Pasta Momma engaged at the three-quarters of 1:28.4 with Sugar Bowl sprinting away in the final eighth to win in 1:56.4. Pasta Momma was second over Lady Devine (David Dowling). Ashley Gamester trains Sugar Bowl for owners Tommy Collings and Brian MacPhee of Mount Stewart.
Driver Gilles Barrieau tripled on the Thursday night card starting off with Talldarklatte (2:00.3) in a maiden breaking score from the Tom Weatherbie barn. Woodmere Delta was a popular winner for trainer Jeff Holmes in 1:57.1 then Topville Angelina was an upset winner at 17-1 odds in 1:57.2 from the Ron Matheson stable.
New Legacy won the Open Trot in 1:59.2 for the combination of driver Jason Hughes, trainer Jennifer Doyle and owner Danny Birt of Earnscliffe. The winning connections were presented with the McWade Race Night cooler in the winner’s circle.
The Jim Ripley stable came to play on Thursday as the Amherst, N.S., trainer-driver went undefeated with his homebred trotters winning race 2 with Majian Raptor (2:02) at 28-1 odds and race 4 aboard Majian Salsa (2:01.3) at 9-1.
Driver Adam Merner teamed up with trainer Melissa Rennie to win a pair of dashes with iron tough aged mares Woodmere Rollily (1:55.2) in race 10 and Ms Moyse (1:56.2) in race 14 while snapping the eight-race win streak of Woodmere Heather M, who finished second.
