How to Place a Bet
Once you’ve decided how you are going to bet, just step up to the teller and place your bet in the following order:
- Say the name of the track you have selected
- The number of the race
- The amount of the bet
- The type of bet
- The number of the horse
The Basic Bets:
Win: Your horse must finish the race in first place.
Place: Your horse must finish the race in first or second place
Show: Your horse must finish the race in 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
You have the best chance of winning on a show bet although the payoff is often the smallest.
Across the Board to your pick: that’s betting WIN, PLACE AND SHOW on all three. If your horse wins the race you collect on all three – Win, Place and Show, if your horse comes second you collect on place and show, and if your horse places third you collect on the show bet!
The Daily Double: You must bet 2 horses that finish 1st in the two consecutive races.
Exactor: Your 2 horses must finish 1st and 2nd in exact order in the same race.
Exactor Box: Your 2 horses can finish either 1st or 2nd.
Triactors: Your 3 horses must finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the exact order, in the same race.
Triactor Box: Your 3 horses must finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Superfecta: Select the first 4 horses in exact order of finish.
Win 4: Select the winner of 4 consecutive races for the races designated as Win 4 events. This bet must be placed before the first of the 4 races is run.
